The Astronomical Clock or the Prague Orloj as it is also known is an extremely popular site located in the Old Town Square and dates back to the 1400s. Every hour the four figures are set in motion, and the skeleton representing death strikes the hour. The doorways above the clock are opened and Christ is followed by the 12 apostles for every daylight hour. The twelve zodiac signs are represented and the three dials move independently of one another. The ball, representing the moon is half silvered and half black, and rotates every synodic (lunar) month displaying its phase. During WWII the clock was nearly destroyed by the Nazis and the townspeople selfless took it upon themselves in a labour of love to restore the destroyed clock to its present impeccable condition.
